Sega Announces Game Gear Micro Retro Gaming Console

Retro gaming has never been more popular. The past few years have seen the significant gaming manufacturers cash in on this wave of nostalgia, releasing modern, cheaper variants of their classic consoles.

Now, you can add another fan favorite to the list, with the release of the Sega Game Gear Micro.

What Is the Sega Game Gear Micro?

As part of Sega’s 60th-anniversary celebrations, the company has refreshed and downsized its much-beloved handheld console from the early 1990s. Back then, you had two choices for portable gaming; Nintendo’s Gameboy or the Sega Game Gear. While the Gameboy was the more commercially successful of the two, the Game Gear won praise for its graphics, gameplay, and color screen.

The Game Gear Micro, which will initially only be available in Japan, is a miniature redesign of the original console. The Micro moniker can be taken literally as well; the unit measures just 80mm in width and 43mm in height with a 1.15-inch display. While this is an enjoyable novelty, it remains to be seen how practical gaming is on such a small device.

Despite being a portable console, the original Game Gear was bulky and power-hungry, devouring six AA batteries in a matter of days. On the other hand, the Game Gear Micro is powered by just two AAA batteries or via a micro-USB charger. Uniquely, Sega has decided to release four colored variants of the console, each configured with a different set of pre-installed games.

It’s not clear whether this is for practical considerations (which seems unlikely given the low storage requirements of these older games), or to create a collector’s market for the newly released console. However, each unit will ship with four in-built games, including family favorites like Sonic The Hedgehog and Sonic & Tails.

Sega Game Gear Micro Availability

The Sega Game Gear Micro will launch in Japan on October 6th for ¥4,980 ($45). There is currently no word on whether the console will be available in other regions. That said, other retro gaming units have launched with limited availability before entering a more significant production run. So, there is still hope of a wider release.

In the meantime, to get your fill of nostalgia-based gaming, consider investing in one of the best retro gaming consoles you can buy right now.
