You Can Now Enable Dark Mode on WhatsApp

WhatsApp finally has a dark mode, and it’s now available to all users on Android and iOS. As the name suggests, WhatsApp’s dark mode turns the lights down, letting you use WhatsApp in bed without straining your eyes and/or disturbing your significant other.

Every App Needs Its Own Dark Mode

Dark modes are commonplace these days. Both Android and iOS allow you to choose dark themes at the system level, and most apps offer their own dark modes. The idea being that dark backgrounds put less strain on your eyes, especially in dark environments.

WhatsApp is somewhat late to the party here, with plenty of other apps already offering dark themes or night modes. However, after testing its own dark mode for several months, WhatsApp has launched its own dark mode on the Android and iOS apps.

WhatsApp Finally Gets a Dark Mode

WhatsApp announced its new dark mode in a post on the Facebook Newsroom. The company claims that this is “the most requested feature from users everywhere” and that it “offers a fresh look on a familiar experience.” A fresh, dark look, obviously.

When developing its dark mode, WhatsApp focused on two areas: Readability and Information Hierarchy. Readability means that WhatsApp has chosen colors close to the system defaults on Android and iOS, which equates to dark-gray and off-white.

Information Hierarchy refers to the other colors WhatsApp has chosen for its dark mode. The idea is to use different colors for different elements to “make sure the most important information stands out.” And the testing has clearly helped with this.

How to Enable Dark Mode on WhatsApp

To enable WhatsApp’s dark mode, first, update WhatsApp. Then, if you’re using Android 10 or iOS 13, enable dark mode in your system settings. Alternatively, if you’re using Android 9 or below, open WhatsApp and click Settings > Chats > Theme > Dark.

As we mentioned earlier, WhatsApp is pretty late to the party when it comes to adding a dark mode, with plenty of other apps beating it to the punch by months, if not years. With that in mind, here are some popular iPhone apps that offer dark mode support.
