CES 2020: LG’s Rolling TV Is Great, But Will it Ever Be Available?

LG has never been afraid to show off its latest concept ideas at CES, and the 2020 edition of the Las Vegas tradeshow is no different.

The company is demoing an all-new rollable TV—it drops down from the ceiling, like a projector, at the press of a button.

Make no mistake; the unit looks impressive. The TV takes just a few seconds to unfurl, and the image is crisp and clear.

But wait… This all sounds a bit familiar. Didn’t LG announce something similar at last year’s show? And the show before that?

Well, yes. LG’s rollable TVs in 2018 and 2019 were slightly different; they rolled up out of a coffee table-esque unit rather than down from the ceiling. But that (admittedly sensible) design tweak aside, there’s not a lot of difference between the two models.

So, what happened to the 2018 and 2019 versions?

Originally, the 2018 model was supposed to ship in mid-2019 in South Korea. The deadline was missed, and the date pushed back to late-2019 for Korea and mid-2020 for the rest of the world. Those deadlines once again slipped by. Then, at IFA in Berlin in September 2019, LG said the TVs probably won’t be globally available until 2021 at the earliest. It doesn’t exactly fill us with confidence that the new, revised rollable TV will be any different.

Will rollable TVs eventually become commonplace in homes around the world? Undoubtedly. But the tech is clearly still a long way from being consumer-ready.
